Race Results

I remember my first race pretty well.  I was 6 years old that
summer racing a GT bmx mi abuelo Guadalupe gave me the
previous Christmas.  Pa had just taken the training wheels off that
spring and Ma took me to the track the day of the race.  I can't recall
if it was my idea and I wanted to race or if she just thought to bring
me for fun.  I'm certain we would have rode our bikes to the
monastery so I could join the priesthood if she thought that day
would ignite my racing passion and evolve into my current
endeavors.  She believes in me, but poor mama still worries so.
Anyway, I remember a slight chill, so I had a flannel shirt on over
my t-shirt, much like I still wear today.  I also had on a helmet I had
borrowed, oh, and blue jeans.  Probably the same brand I still wear.

"Don't hold your brake.  Let the gate hold you back and start
pedaling when it falls."

I can't recall who said that to me before the third heat, but I
remember following those directions to the letter.  When the gate
fell I shot down the starting hill past all the other riders.  That very
feeling of speed is a rush for the heart and brain and senses, and it
brands itself to your memory.  Still pedaling over the first jump I
landed so hard the seat broke so I could not sit down.  I was so
excited to be up front I pedaled all the way around the track and
won that last heat by a mile.

I still ride my beamer (bmx) outside of working on #13.  If you
come and watch the renegades you'll see for yourself I'm still
racing.  Maybe you'll even get to feel the excitement I feel when I'm
chasing that rush.
